Would you like a free slice of TOAST?
I’m 34 years old today.
I’m an adult now.
Look.
And as a birthday gift to you, I’d like to ship you a free slice of toast. It will be buttery and delicious. It will be 6-pages long, illustrated by the amazing Selçuk Orén, written by myself, based on a short story written by a younger version of myself.
BUT WHAT THE HELL IS TOAST?
I’m glad you asked.
TOAST is the little story that could.
Years ago, I wrote a 90k word novel about a man walking through a post-apocalyptic city and it was awful. Not the city. The novel. But also the city.
There was, however, one chapter that survived. A short chapter that had nothing to do with the main story. It was about a sentient toaster looking for someone, anyone, to serve toast to.
That single chapter survived the apocalypse that was that novel and ended up becoming an episode of our short story podcast, The Other Stories (listen here).
And for whatever reason… people liked it.
Check out this review from ages ago:
“Toast by Luke Kondor is the best short fiction I’ve ever heard on a podcast. I was kind of devastated by it.” — @Kendra_Temples via Twitter.
Cut to a few years later and I had the lovely and incredible artist, Selçuk, adapt the story to the comic form, and again… people liked it. It was the number one recommended comic on Behance for almost two weeks.
and…
That’s what I want to give to you, a free comic.
I love TOAST.
He’s the little robot that never gives up, both inside the story, and also the story itself. And as I’ve got a little stack of them sitting on my shelf, I wanted to ship some out to you guys… my delicious and buttery subscribers.
So if you’re comfortable with doing so, send over your postal address and I’ll send one over. UK postage should be cheap and easy but if you’re overseas I may need you to cover the postage but it's only a teeny-tiny comic so shouldn’t be much (PayPal address is lukeofkondor@me.com).
Anyway…
Happy birthday (me).
I hope you (I) have a wonderful day.
Until next time,
Luke
